The Protein Index
How the WheyIndex Index works
WheyIndex is an independent Protein Index: we track what's inside protein products, what they cost per 25g of pure protein, and whether the current price is fair versus recent history. We do not sell rankings.
Index Score (0–100)
Every scored product gets an Index Score:
- 60% formulation — six equally weighted ingredient checks
- 30% sugar — fixed thresholds per 25g protein
- 10% value — lower cost per 25g protein within the same sales market scores higher
The Index badge on product cards and Amazon (via our extension) shows this score at a glance.
Methodology version: index-v1.1
The final score is rounded once: 0.60 × formulation + 0.30 × sugar + 0.10 × value. Each component is on a 0–100 scale. This is a comparison model, not a validated safety assessment or a measure of biological protein quality.
Formulation
Each of the six checks contributes one sixth of the formulation component: no identified artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners, fillers/thickeners, or high-fructose corn syrup. These reflect formulation preferences; an ingredient being artificial does not by itself establish that it is unsafe.
We require completed nutrition processing, a source ingredient list, and categorized ingredient records. Missing ingredient evidence is not treated as passing all six checks. Findings reflect our recorded ingredient analysis, not independent laboratory verification.
Sugar thresholds
For sugar per 25g protein, the component scores are: 0g = 100; above 0g through 2g = 80; above 2g through 4g = 60; above 4g through 7g = 40; above 7g through 10g = 20; above 10g = 0. Missing sugar information is never treated as zero.
Sugar per 25g protein = sugar grams per serving ÷ protein grams per serving × 25.
Value benchmark
We compare products with a positive recorded cost and protein amount in the same sales market, excluding deleted listings. The lowest cost receives 100; other products receive 100 times the fraction of benchmark products that cost more. Ties receive the same value score. At least two benchmark products are required. The current dataset represents US listings in USD; country of manufacture does not determine the sales market. Search filters do not change this benchmark.
Value can change with prices and catalogue coverage. This affects at most 10 points of the overall Index. Future markets will have separate price benchmarks.
Incomplete information and labels
If formulation, sugar, protein amount, price, or the market benchmark cannot be assessed, the overall Index is unscored and shows “Not enough information.” Available components can still be shown. We do not redistribute missing component weights.
Labels use the same thresholds everywhere: Excellent ≥80, Good ≥70, Fair ≥55, Poor below 55. Recommendation sorting in the protein finder is a separate preference ranking; it does not change the Index score.
A worked example
Suppose a product passes four of the six formulation checks, contains 2g sugar per 25g protein, and has a value component of 50. Its weighted contributions are 40 points for formulation, 24 for sugar, and 5 for value: an Index Score of 69/100 (Fair). This is an illustrative example, not a product rating.
Price per 25g protein
Tub price is misleading when serving sizes and protein concentration differ. We normalize to the cost of 25 grams of protein — the standard comparison unit on WheyIndex.
Cost per 25g protein = cost per serving ÷ protein grams per serving × 25. Cost per serving is the recorded product price divided by the number of servings. For example, $1.20 per serving with 24g protein costs $1.25 per 25g protein.
